The 2025 UBC MasterCard Foundation Scholarship is now accepting applications, and it’s your chance to pursue a Master’s degree at one of Canada’s top universities.
What’s This All About?
The UBC MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program is all about empowering bright, young minds from Sub-Saharan Africa who might not have the financial means to pursue higher education.
This scholarship isn’t just about academics—it’s about nurturing leaders who will make a difference in their communities and beyond.
Available Master’s Programs:
If you’re interested in forestry, land and food systems, or data science, this is for you! Here are the specific programs you can apply for:
Faculty of Forestry:
- Master of Sustainable Forest Management (MSFM)
- Master of International Forestry (MIF)
- Master of Geomatics for Environmental Management (MGEM)
Faculty of Land and Food Systems:
- Master of Food and Resource Economics (MFRE)
- Master of Food Science (MFS)
- Master of Land and Water Systems (MLWS)
Faculty of Science:
- Master of Data Science
UBC is proud to be one of the first Canadian universities to join the MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program.
This global initiative, in partnership with 14 other institutions, is part of a $500 million effort to support education and leadership development.
Who Can Apply?
If you’re thinking about applying, here’s what you need to know:
- You must have completed a Bachelor’s degree.
- You should be 35 years old or younger (born in 1988 or later).
- You need to be a citizen or refugee from a Sub-Saharan African country.
- You must have spent a significant part of your life in Sub-Saharan Africa.
- Financial need is a key factor—we’re looking for students who need a helping hand to achieve their dreams.
- Academic excellence is important, especially if you’ve overcome tough challenges to succeed.
- We’re looking for future leaders—people who are committed to giving back to their communities.
- You must be applying for one of the eligible Master’s programs at UBC’s Vancouver campus.
What Will You Get?
If you’re selected, this scholarship will cover everything: tuition, travel, textbooks, housing, food, and living expenses.
But that’s not all—you’ll also receive support from UBC to help you succeed academically, socially, and even after you graduate.
How to Apply:
Ready to take the next step? Here’s how:
- Check Your Eligibility:
- Choose your program of interest and make sure you meet the requirements.
- English Proficiency:
- If your Bachelor’s degree wasn’t taught in English, you’ll need to take an English proficiency test (TOEFL or IELTS).
- Complete the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program Application:
- Submit all your documents electronically by December 1, 2023. Make sure everything is in one PDF file.
- Apply to UBC:
- Once your Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program application is complete, you’ll get instructions on how to apply to UBC.
- The Selection Process:
- Faculties will review applications in February 2025, and shortlisted candidates will be invited for a video interview. Final decisions will be announced in April 2025.
