Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) Free Business Registration

The Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) has announced the opening of applications for its Free Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) Business Registration Programme, an initiative designed to support the formalization of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) across Nigeria. The programme targets approximately 250,000 entrepreneurs nationwide and is intended to reduce the financial burden associated with business registration.

This initiative is part of a broader Federal Government–supported effort to encourage entrepreneurship, improve business documentation, and strengthen the MSME sector. Through the programme, SMEDAN covers the full cost of registering a business name with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), enabling eligible business owners to obtain legal recognition without paying statutory registration fees.

Upon successful registration, beneficiaries receive official CAC business registration documents, which serve as legal proof of business ownership. These documents are essential for enhancing business credibility and unlocking access to a wide range of opportunities, including government interventions, grants, loans, and private-sector partnerships.

The programme is open to individuals operating micro, small, or medium-scale enterprises anywhere within Nigeria, provided their businesses are not already registered with the CAC. Applicants are required to provide valid personal information, including full name, active phone number, and a recognized form of identification. Accurate information is important, as it is used to verify eligibility and process the registration.

Business registration with the CAC is widely regarded as a critical step for entrepreneurs in Nigeria. It enables business owners to operate legally, improves trust among customers and partners, and creates opportunities for financial inclusion. Registered businesses are also better positioned to open corporate bank accounts, access institutional funding, and participate in government or private-sector development programmes.

The application process for the SMEDAN Free CAC Business Registration Programme is conducted online through the official portal. Interested applicants are required to follow these steps:

first, they must visit the SMEDAN registration portal at https://portal.smedan.gov.ng/signup and create an account. After account creation, users are expected to verify their details, complete the application form with accurate personal and business information, and submit their application for review.
Successful applicants will undergo verification before their business registration is processed through the CAC.

Applicants are advised to ensure that all submitted details match their official identification documents to avoid delays or disqualification. Further information about the programme can be accessed via https://portal.smedan.gov.ng/cac-information
