The Nordic Africa Institute (NAI) Scholarship Programme is a fantastic opportunity for Masters and PhD researchers across Africa to take their work to the next level.

This programme invites scholars to the Institute in Sweden, offering the support and resources needed to further their research.

With full funding for travel, living, and settling-in costs, plus a personal workspace at the Institute, this scholarship is a unique chance to immerse yourself in a rich academic environment.

Who’s Eligible for the 2024 NAI Scholarship?

You can apply if:

  • You’re a full-time staff member at an African university or research center, pursuing a doctoral degree, and you don’t already have an international scholarship.
  • You’ve completed your PhD within the last 5 years and are now working as a postdoctoral researcher.
  • You’re an African national affiliated with a university or research center in Sweden, Finland, Denmark, or Iceland.

Scholarship Benefits:

The NAI Scholarship covers:

  • Travel and Living Costs: You’ll receive economy-class return airfare, accommodation, and a daily subsistence allowance of 400 SEK (approx. 40 USD).
  • Installation Grant: You’ll also get a one-time grant of 2,500 SEK (approx. 250 USD) to help you settle in.
  • Workspace: You’ll have a dedicated desk and computer in a shared office, giving you a quiet place to focus on your work.
  • Research Support: Full access to the NAI’s specialized library, as well as the Uppsala University Library and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences Library.
  • Networking and Presentation: You’ll have opportunities to present your research at the Institute and connect with other institutions in the Nordic countries.

What You’ll Need to Apply:

To complete your application, please have the following ready:

  • CV: Include an up-to-date CV with a list of your publications (with links if available).
  • Research Proposal: A 5-page outline of your research project.
  • Work Plan: A 1-page plan detailing your goals and what you aim to achieve during your time at the Institute.
  • Reference Letter: A signed letter of support from your Head of Department or a senior scholar, confirming your current affiliation and area of research.
