    Role: Sign Language Interpreter Consultancy

    Description of consultancy: To provide sign language interpretation services for the Disability Inclusion Advisor in the workspace.

    1. Background and rationale

    Effective communication is a fundamental right and a cornerstone for inclusion, accessibility and equity for the Deaf, Deaf-Blind, and Hard-of-hearing individuals. The Disability Inclusion Advisor at the CBM Global Nigeria Country Team is a Sign Language User. It is intrinsic upon CBM Global to provide this service for the Disability Inclusion Advisor, as part of his reasonable accommodation at work, to break the communication barrier and enable him to fully participate in the workspace.

    To meet this need, the service of a qualified sign language interpreter is required.

    2. Purpose and Deliverables

    The purpose of this consultancy is to:

    • Provide professional interpretation in sign language to the Disability Inclusion Advisor, perform a variety of communication support, and assist with information management for the CBM Global Nigeria Country Team.

    3. Scope

    The scope of work for the Sign Language Interpretation is to:

    • Facilitate clear and seamless communication between the Disability Inclusion Advisor and his hearing colleagues at the CBM Global Nigeria Country Team and other people during meetings or other official engagements.
    • Provide real-time interpretation from spoken language to sign language and vice versa to the Disability Inclusion Advisor during meetings, workshops, or conferences.
    • Ensure accurate and culturally appropriate interpretation that aligns with the communication preferences of the Deaf (Disability Inclusion Advisor).
    • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in handling all information shared during the engagement.
    • Collaborate with the CBM Global Nigeria Country Team and event organizers to ensure effective interpretation logistics, including seating arrangements, visibility, and technical requirements.
    • To perform other related work as required within the period of the consultancy.

    4. Timeframe and duration

    The consultancy engagement will cover daily office attendance when the Disability Inclusion Advisor requires sign language interpretation service. The duration of the consultant is for one year, beginning from 1st February 2025 – 31st January 2026.

    5. Place / location of service delivered

    The consultancy engagement will take place at CBM Global Nigeria Office in Abuja for official engagements held within or outside CBM Global Nigeria Country office, including outside Abuja, and determined by the Disability Inclusion Advisor’s work schedules.

    6. Required Expert Profile

    The consultant should

    • Be fluent in Nigerian Sign Language and English Language.
    • Possess good communications skills in both sign language and public speaking, including at high-level meetings, conferences, and other events.
    • Possess good command of both oral and sign language.
    • Possess at least five (5) years and proven experience in interpreting for Deaf persons and other persons with disabilities in the development sector.
    • Have strong knowledge of the Deaf community and how to relate with Deaf persons.
    • Have effective in human connection and code of ethics in the professionalism including quick thinking and observational skills while receptive the signer of Deaf participants
    • Have sound analytical skills proven through similar consultancy experiences.

    7. Payment schedule

    Payment shall be made to the consultant against formal, signed invoice(s) submitted by the Consultant within one month of services being provided and supported by approved timesheet for the month.
