The Gates Cambridge Scholarship is designed to support outstanding students from outside the UK in pursuing a postgraduate degree at the prestigious University of Cambridge.

What Does the Scholarship Cover?
As a Gates Cambridge Scholar, you’ll receive:
- Full coverage of your university tuition fees.
- An annual maintenance allowance of £20,000.
- Funding for one round-trip economy airfare at the beginning and end of your course.
- Coverage for visa costs and the Immigration Health Surcharge.
- Additional discretionary funding for academic development, dependent children, fieldwork, and more.
About the Gates Cambridge Scholarship
Each year, approximately 80 full-cost scholarships are awarded to exceptional applicants from countries outside the UK. The program was established in October 2000, thanks to a generous donation of $210 million from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to the University of Cambridge.
Since its inception, the Gates Cambridge Trust has supported over 2,000 scholars from more than 100 countries.

Eligibility Requirements for 2025
You can apply for the Gates Cambridge Scholarship if you meet the following criteria:
- You are a citizen of any country outside the United Kingdom.
- You are applying to pursue one of the following courses at the University of Cambridge:
- PhD (full-time or part-time)
- MLitt (full-time)
- One-year postgraduate course (full-time), with some exceptions
- If you are currently studying at Cambridge and wish to apply for a new postgraduate course, you are eligible to apply for this scholarship.
Duration and Benefits
The Gates Cambridge Scholarship covers the full cost of studying at Cambridge, including:
- University Composition Fee
- Maintenance allowance (£20,000 for 12 months at the 2023-24 rate; pro-rata for courses shorter than 12 months)
- One economy airfare at the beginning and end of your course
- Visa and Immigration Health Surcharge costs
In addition, the scholarship offers discretionary funding for:
- Academic development (£500 to £2,000 depending on course length)
- Dependent Children Allowance (£11,604 for one child, £16,548 for two or more)
- Fieldwork, maternity/paternity leave, and hardship funding for unforeseen circumstances

How to Apply
Applying for the Gates Cambridge Scholarship involves the following steps:
- Submit your application for admission and funding (including the Gates Cambridge Scholarship) through the University’s Graduate Application Portal.
- In your application, complete both the admission section for your chosen graduate course and College place, and the Gates Cambridge funding section.
- Ensure you provide all necessary details about your academic background, plans, and suitability for the course.
- Your full application will be reviewed by the Gates Cambridge selection panels, and shortlisted candidates will be contacted for further evaluation.
