Christian Health Association of Nigeria (CHAN) is a Faith Based Organisation (FBO) that brings together Nigerian churches involved in the provision of healthcare services and human resources for health development. CHAN is registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission of Nigeria as an umbrella organization for the coordination of all Christian Health services in Nigeria. Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), The Christian Council of Nigeria (CCN), and The Northern Christian Medical Advisory Council of Nigeria (NCMAC). CHAN has nearly 400 healthcare facilities as its Member Institutions (MIs) that are run by 20 Church denominations involved in the provision of wholistic health care services including collaboration with and complementing government efforts in health care provision.

CHAN provides support to its MIs through capacity building, coordination of activities, drug supply through our subsidiary company CHANMedi-Pharm, Ltd by GTE, lobbying and advocacy, public relations and translation of government policies into action in line with the teaching of the churches.  

We are seeking for a suitable candidate for the post of Secretary General in the organisation.

Main purpose of the Job

Within the framework of CHAN’s vision, mission, values and strategy of REACHING THE UNREACHED, the Secretary General will lead the development and implementation of health care strategy and programmes including policy analysis and advocacy. He/She will lead the fundraising and resource mobilisation for the country programme as well as nurture partnerships with government, donors, and organisations in the health industry in Nigeria. The ideal candidate will be an excellent leader with experience in managing health programmes, will report to the CHAN President who presides over the National Executive Council (NEC) and will be based in Jos with 30% travel to Abuja and project sites.

Specific Responsibilities Relationship building

  • Strengthen relationships and maintain open lines of communication with Founding Fathers and MIs to keep them informed of the work of the organisation and to identify changes in the community served by CHAN.  
  • Foster effective teamwork with NEC, MIs and staff and identify, assess and inform NEC of internal and external issues that affect CHAN.

Develop and maintain excellent working relationships with the Government of the country; in particular, with relevant national, state and local level officials in the health industry  

  • Use external presence and relationships to garner new opportunities.
  • Promote strong and open relationships with Christian Health Associations and Networks, including the Christian Connections for International Health.
  • Ensure that CHAN operates within the terms and conditions of all legal agreements with partners.  
  • Maintain an appropriate public image for CHAN that is in keeping with our Christian values and culture, act as CHAN spokesperson when required and ensure maximum visibility of the organisation among the donor, FBO, Government and Non-governmental Organisation community. Resource mobilization
  • Ensure all programme activities are sensitive to our Christian values and responsive to changes in the political, social, and economic environments.  
  • Research funding sources, oversee the development of fund raising plans, write funding proposals in line with CHAN strategy, to increase the revenue of CHAN.
  • Maintain and expand revenue generating and fund raising activities to support existing programme operations and planned expansions, including fund raising campaigns and donor management activities.
  • Nurture good working relationships and collaborative arrangements with key donors, potential donors, in and outside Nigeria and actively source local funding appropriate to help meet CHAN’s resource needs.
  • Ensure a regular flow of information is available to the funding departments and to donors and official funders as required by the various funding mechanisms.  
  • Ensure timely, relevant and good quality reporting to donors and sponsors of CHAN when statutory and when requested.  Staff Management
  • Lead the implementation of Human Resources and Organisational Development policies, processes and systems.  
  • Direct and ensure the proper implementation of CHAN’s performance management system in the country programme including regular feedback and coaching processes.
  • Maintain effective and appropriate staff recruitment, induction, appraisal, and remuneration and development practices at all levels.
  • Identify necessary staff talent development, career development and succession planning.

Provide proper supervision and management for all direct reports and lead the establishment and functioning of a strong, effective and coordinated country team.

  • Promote a cooperative and harmonious work environment including staff participation and feedback, conflict resolution and effective communication.  

Financial/Programme Management and Operations

  • Oversee all financial aspects of the organisation, including the development and adherence to the annual budget.
  • Administer the funds of the organisation according to the approved budget and provide the NEC through the President with comprehensive, regular reports on CHAN revenues and expenditure.  
  • Oversee the planning, implementation and evaluation of CHAN programmes to maintain and improve quality.
  • Ensure CHAN programmes contribute to the organization’s mission and reflect the priorities of the Founding Fathers, NEC and MIs.
  • Ensure that CHAN operations meet the expectations of the clients, MIs NEC and the Founding Fathers.
  • Draft policies for the approval of NEC and prepare procedures to implement the policies, review and recommend changes to NEC
  • As a member of NEC, provide support to NEC and Founding Fathers  by preparing meeting agenda and supporting materials.

Qualifications

  • A committed full member of his church and is in good standing.  
  • A holder of a degree in health or health related fields.  
  • A post-graduate degree in health sciences, development studies or development  • related field is desirable.  
  • At least 10 years proven track record in leading and managing health institutions and development programmes as well as having worked in a mission health institution.  
  • Demonstrated management expertise at a senior level within a health institutional setting, including proven ability to develop the capacities of multidisciplinary professional teams undertaking comprehensive health care delivery strategies.  
  • Sound and up-to date knowledge of development concepts, methodologies, and techniques including demonstrated expertise in at least one specialist development field.
  • Expertise in policy analysis, research skills, participatory approaches to development, policy formulation, and advocacy for change.  

Excellent negotiation and communication skills, including demonstrated ability to handle sensitive diplomatic and stakeholder level negotiations on matters affecting CHAN programmes.  

  • Be committed to gender equity, empowering management practices, be value driven and possess strong networking, people and financial management skills.  
  • Demonstrated capabilities in fundraising and donor relations.  
  • Strong ability to properly manage complex financial control and management systems.
