Context

Médecins Sans Frontières is a private, not-for-profit international humanitarian organization dedicated to providing medical assistance to populations in distress, without discrimination and regardless of race, religion, creed or political affiliation. MSF has been active in Katsina since February 2021 after carrying an exploratory mission that end up with an opening of the project. Currently, MSF is running two ITFCs (Inpatient Therapeutic Feeding Centre) in Katsina in the Kofar Sauri PHCC and Turai Yar’adua PHCC and 5 ATFC (Ambulatory Therapeutic Feeding Centre) including three in Jibia LGA (Magama, Daddara, Riko,) one in Mashi and one in Katsina City (Kofar Marusa).

Main Purpose 

Under the supervision of the Nutritional Nurse, participating in the nutritional case management of children suffering from acute malnutrition according to MSF nutritional and hygiene protocols, standards and procedures to ensure the delivery of quality medical care for patients and their communities and improve the health conditions of the targeted population

Job Description

  • Carrying out basic health care (swabbing, applying local treatments, etc.) following the rules on hygiene and asep-sis.
  • Informing caretakers on the functioning of the center: layout, daily activity plan (number and frequency of the meals, medical visit, weight measurement, etc.) and other general information.
EducationLiteracy and sound knowledge on nutrition protocols required; Diploma in nutrition and dietetics or nursing related field is added advantage.
ExperienceExperience in Nutrition project is essential; Nursing/midwife background is an added advantage
LanguagesEnglish Language essential. 
  • Distributing meals according to medical prescriptions for each patient, ensuring that no other food is given in place. Reporting on daily basis, the intake of the patients under nutritional treatment.
  • Providing hygienic training and sanitation education to children, mothers and the targeted population and stimulating mothers to breast-feed.
  • Monitoring and reporting weight and other vital indicators, if necessary, (temperature, heart and respiratory rates) of each patient. Applying the correct procedures in the event of a fever or hypothermia and reporting to the nurse pathological symptoms such as, apathetic, anorexia, not drinking, vomiting, fever, dehydration, diarrhea, etc. Preparing ORS, when required.
  • Supervising drinking water availability in the ward and ensuring it is well identified.
  • Supervising the maintenance of clean premises and materials
  • Performing minor maintenance and cleaning of the biomedical equipment following user manual and protocols. Alerting the supervisor in case of malfunctioning of any device.
  • Actively participate in ward round activity and other medical care to improve patient care
  • Ensure proper monitoring of patient input and output chat, ensure oral replacement when needed
  • Ensure all patients have admission kits/ educate on proper usage of Kits in the units
  • Support Nurse in unit / pharmacy organization and drug storage/ support in laboratory investigations process where applicable
  • Support the nurse in supervises patients to ensure adherence to treatment
  • Support in meal distributions to caregivers/ patients were applicable
  • Support HPOs and other team in daily heath education of patients and caregivers
  • Ensure respect to IPC rules in all procedures (Milk room, distribution of meal)
  • Ensure continuity of care through proper handing and taking over of patients, drugs, biomed equipment’s, data and patients records
  • Support patients and caregivers to improve their hygiene and other well-being
  • Perform daily maintenance/ inventory of biomedical devices
  • Perform other responsibilities assigned to him/ her by the supervisors
  • Participation in departmental meetings, routine training, mortality and morbidity reviews

Remuneration

According to MSF salary scale plus 13th month allowance equivalent to 1 month of gross salary.
